Are Fitbits any good? - Lemmy.World
I’ve been exclusively on Garmin watches since my interest in fitness started, my
current Watch is a Forerunner 255s that I bought around 3 years ago. Thing is,
it’s been slowly starting to decline in battery life (one charge maybe lasts 5-7
days) and my height sensor started to really drift around, giving me that “You
climbed 10 stories!” achievement like 7 times every day. I was going to get a
new Garmin when this one completely bit the dust, but due to a weird bundle deal
at the Google Store, it was 300€ cheaper to buy a Pixel 9 and a Fitbit Charge 6
than it was to just buy the phone. I can’t sell the Fitbit for at least two
years, since I bought the bundle as a “work expense” without paying taxes. So my
options are to either use it myself or to give it to someone who I could quickly
get it back from if the Tax Agency comes to check on whether I’m not reselling.
Sooo… does anyone here use Fitbit and could share their opinion on how it holds
up? I’m especially interested in hearing how long the battery lasts and whether
it works well with ANT+ devices (I use a Polar HR Strap and occasionally a bike
cadence sensor) Also, how annoying is it to listen to music on it? I bought the
Music variant of the Garmin just to find out that it only really works with
Spotify Premium… which I’m way too cheap to get. And manually transferring MP3s
to it is really annoying haha

Fairphone 6 downgraded to USB-C 2.0 - Lemmy.World
Despite all the other compromises with the FF6, I still was ready to buy it
until I noticed the USB-C 2.0. Which means no Android Desktop and significantly
slower data transfer than the USB-C 3.0 in FF5. The linked Discussion thread
from the Fairphone forum has some interesting additional points. Is this a
dealbreaker for you? (It is for me, I’m ordering a different phone today…)

What are your approaches to donating? - Lemmy.World
Now that I’m in an age and income bracket that can afford it, I’ve been trying
to be more liberal with donating to causes that seem worthwhile. Yesterday my
partner and I were walking around a large cultural event thing in Kiel (Germany)
- thousands of people, lots of overpriced food trucks, lots of local bands and
artists. One artist had a workshop in a little glass cube and was making wooden
sculptures all day. Huge crowd all around watching him. He had a sign up front
explaining that he had been struggling financially because art is a luxury and
one of the first things people stop buying when the cost of living goes up. The
sign also had a QR link to his Gofundme, so I tossed him 5 bucks with no second
thought. Kind of assumed that he’d be getting plenty of little donations like
that, just because there were so many people and the event overall was very “12€
avocado toast” coded. But once I got home I checked the donation history and it
turns out I was the only one who donated at all that day:

I was kinda upset about that and even checked the Url from different devices to
make sure it wasn’t a website caching thing. I definitely will be upping my
donation once I get home tonight, but in the meantime I’d be curious to learn
about the average consensus on donations - How much and under which conditions
do you donate (or would donate if you could afford it)? Do you do rare but big
donations or small ones spread over lots of causes?

They’ve started posting a link to ask them anonymous questions a few weeks ago
and answering the questions on their whatsapp status. And those questions were
getting weird to a point where my partner and I had a betting pool on whether
they’re shitposts or bullying. Today I noticed that “sent with ♥️ by team ngl”
text at the bottom and downloaded that app to check. And yup, they’re just
random default questions:

seems like no one has ever sent a real question. I need to share this to
distribute my bewilderment

Thai Con struggles - Lemmy.World
Getting Thai Cons while being as bad with plants as I am was such a huge mistake
haha The first one I got in late September - it was a young but well established
plant with 3 leaves - one of them already decently fenestrated! I kept it in my
very dark living room with a rather sad little grow light and it started rotting
basically right away. In desperation, I tried moving it to LECA and a much
brighter spot, which seemingly did more damage as I had been a bit rough on the
roots as I was cleaning the soil and rotten stuff off. By December, all roots
had died off and the rot was starting to get to the stem :( I was really worried
about the stem getting affected, so I made the executive decision to split up
the plant about a month ago. The smallest leaf had already died off earlier, so
one leaf was left with the questionable stem while the top-cutting (that had
been struggling to push a new leaf since November!!) got exactly one root node.
All the root nodes left on the stem cutting had already grown and rotted away,
so I wasn’t sure whether that one could be saved.

[https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/c916561a-c2f5-44ef-9ab0-fab570c8e351.jpeg] I
think it was the right call though! The top cutting is growing amazing new roots
with no rot in sight (see header picture), while the stem cutting is
unexpectedly pushing out some small new root buds!!

second Thai Con - which I got in November and put into LECA at the same time as
the other one - HAD been looking good until recently, but I’m guessing I was a
bit too enthusiastic when building that self-watering pole and now it looks like
overwatering is getting to it.

at least I’m hoping that the yellow leaves and the weird brown stuff on the back
of the leaves is just overwatering and not some larger issue ;_;

ELI5: setting up a custom email? - Lemmy.World
Heyhey! My fiance has been struggling with lack of space in his current email,
plus his current provider (web.de [http://web.de]) doesn’t have the most
professional name, which is bothering him because he’s currently applying for
jobs. So I was looking to get him a nice clean email for Valentine’s, that has a
simple name and enough space for a while. Problem is - I’m kinda dumb and have
very little idea of how web hosting and email work (despite working as a
Software Engineer…). So I could use some input on what steps I should be taking
to get what I’m looking for while avoiding the pitfalls and hidden costs that
some service providers have. So far, I’ve found a nice {hisLastname}.cc domain
on namecheap for 50€/10 years. Namecheap also offers a basic email service for
14€ per year, altough I’m not sure whether 5GB is enough space. The next higher
email would be 40€ per year for 30GB of space. That seems more like what I’d be
looking for, but also seems a bit expensive? Does anyone have tips on where else
I might want to look? How expensive would it be to just run my own email server?
Getting a little homeserver rack has been a goal in our hosehold anyways, we
just haven’t had the time to look into what exactly to get. What would I do once
the domain (and maybe email service) is bought? Like, what does the migration
from existing services look like? Would I have to set up specific software
anywhere just to access the mails?
