Working with all these modern layers, I don't see why people bother so much about it. This is all upper level decision to centralize so they feel they keep control. As a dev I'm 100% confident life would be as least as pleasant without all this abysmal layers of remote services that could all be replaced with distributed solutions that work 100% in local with thin sync step here and there.

Hey Visual Basic is still there, and last time I checked it was still the goto option to do OLE Automation.

RoR is no longer at its peak, but is still have its marginal stable share of the web, while PHP gets the lion part[1]

Ok, Lotus Notes is really relic from an other era now. But it’s not a PL, so not the same kind of beast.

Well, also LLMs are different beast compared to PL. They actually really are the things that evocate the most the expression "taming the beast" when you need to deal with them. So it indeed as far away as possible of engineering as one can probably use a computer to build any automation. Maybe to stay in scientific realms ethology would be a better starting point than a background in informatics/CS to handle these stuffs.

That still have an issue with the vocabulary. Things like "theirs/our" is still out of touch but it's already better than a loose spatial analogy on some representation of the DAG.

Something like base, that is "common base", looks far more apt to my mind. In the same vein, endogenous/exogenous would be far more precise, or at least aligned with the concern at stake. Maybe "local/alien" might be a less pompous vocabulary to convey the same idea.

It really reads to me like, "you should build a running water circuit", then presenting you how easy it is to phone a plumber and let them free ride on the matter, but beware to not use a project manager as real people implement project management of plumbery themselves."
