New from Protect Democracy's Amanda Carpenter â A good Republican debate would challenge the dangerous idea that Trumpâs alleged criminal behavior makes him stronger.
What is proportional representation, and how could it strengthen our democracy? What's the policy path to reform?
Join us at tomorrow's virtual event hosted by the American Academy of Arts & Sciences with Steven Olikara, Andrew Craig, Norm Ornstein, Alora Thomas & our own Grant Tudor.
As the challenges facing American democracy have grabbed headlines in recent years, problems like partisan gerrymandering and political polarization have become all too familiar to many Americans. Likewise, few today would be surprised to hear that many of their fellow citizens feel that their vote does not matter or that their views are not adequately represented. Moving to a system of multi-member districts with proportional representation could end gerrymandering, reduce polarization, and help more Americans feel their voice is represented in Congress. However, a little-known 1967 law â the Uniform Congressional District Act -- prevents this reform and locks the U.S. into a deeply flawed electoral system. The American Academyâs 2020 Our Common Purpose report recommends revamping this law, and a recent Report from OCP Champions Unite America and Protect Democracy expands on that recommendation and outlines a path forward. In this virtual event co-hosted by Unite America, Andy Craig, Steven Olikara, Norm Ornstein, Alora Thomas-Lundborg, and Grant Tudor will discuss why a growing body of experts believe this reform would strengthen American democracy.
Today's FBI Director Chris Wray's testimony to the House Judiciary Committee about the politicization of law enforcement was critical. We need more of it. New analysis from Anne Tindall and Kristy Parker. https://protectdemocracy.org/work/chris-wray-testifying-congress/
The piece builds on our recent report & analysis on key questions that can help assess whether a government-led investigation or prosecution is appropriate â or an abuse of power: https://protectdemocracy.org/work/how-to-tell-government-investigation-weaponized/
Countries w/ more than 2 parties tend to feature less severe polarization. That's because in multiparty systems, says our own Grant Tudor, "your enemies are never permanent. Your friends today might be your opponents tomorrow & maybe your friends the day after."
A new report by Lee Drutman at New America discusses how two reforms â fusion voting and proportional representation â can build more and better political parties.
Protect Democracy is working to expand access to fusion voting, which according to Drutman's report is "a powerful weapon against extremism in contemporary U.S. politics." We are also advancing research and policy options for proportional representation.

The report â produced by States United Democracy Center, Protect Democracy and Law Forward â found that 185 such bills had been introduced throughoutâŚ
