Hi everyone!
As most of you have probably heard, Meta recently launched their Twitter competitor Threads. They intend to add federation to their service, which would mean Threads becomes part of the Fediverse. Threads users would be able to interact with you on VT Social and other Fediverse instances.
On one hand, Threads (which uses Instagram accounts) already has a large userbase, and it could be helpful to connect with other creatives as well as grow your fan base. On the other hand, many of us have major concerns about Meta's ability to moderate their service effectively, given their past issues with misinformation, harassment, abuse, etc. as well as a general disregard for the privacy of their users.
We've been watching the situation develop in order to decide what is best for our community. After seeing how Threads is doing for a few days, we've come to the conclusion that their moderation policy is incompatible with ours. They seem to be happy harboring accounts that are openly hateful (I'm sure you've heard of examples). By the standards we apply to all instances, we would have to suspend them as an unmoderated instance that is a danger to our users.
For this reason, we will be preemptively suspending threads.net, which means VT Social users will not be able to communicate and interact with Threads users and vice versa, once Threads enables federation.
We're open to changing this policy in the future, but we think this is best for our community at this time.
