Introducing 'The Counteroffensive,' a reporter's open notebook from Ukraine

The Counteroffensive with Tim Mak

This is first on Mastodon! Please boost this thread. It’s an important one.

Good morning to readers. Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

Some career news: I’m leaving NPR as part of the layoffs that dramatically reduced the company’s workforce.

I’ve decided to go back into Ukraine to keep reporting.

But this time, alone.

If you Google search for Youth Conservation Corps you’ll find a huge list of programs at the federal, state, and local levels.

My state runs the Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps and I’m sure ther states have similar programs. https://www.dcnr.pa.gov/outdoorcorps/pages/default.aspx

There is also the Student Conservation Association which was inspired by the CCC and established in 1957. https://www.thesca.org/about/

Another private organization, Conservation Legacy, runs several conservation corps programs around the country https://conservationlegacy.org, for example the Appalachian Conservation Corps http://appalachiancc.org

It’s very common to hear people call for the creation of a new Civilian Conservation Corps. The CCC was a great program so it makes sense to be inspired by it and want to see something like it today. The problem is that people don’t take the time to research. If they did they would find a large number of existing programs inspired by the CCC.

For example, the federal government runs the US Youth Conservation Corps https://www.nps.gov/subjects/youthprograms/ycc.htm
