this is how it works. as guard nodes know your ip is better to trust on one of them rather than randomly changing like other nodes. they rotate like in three months iirc
you can configure bios for self power on at certain time and then turn the server off after finishing backup
me too with redhat 5 at my first job. shortly after moved to 6 that, as far as I remember, was the first showing the green OK at the right of every service starting instead of a mess of output

qubes os is for you. Don’t be scared by it as you can start using it without paying attention to many of its security features like disposables, proxy vms, etc. Just think of it as several vms with a shared clipboard, file sharing mechanism and a convenient apps menu. You can learn later it most advanced stuff
