Old Hollywood and related subjects. Plenty of Ida Lupino, plus Ginger Rogers & Fred Astaire.

Ginger Rogers portrait for “Fifth Avenue Girl” (1939), one of my favorites of her films—and that is a high standard

Re-watched one of my favorites after five years—“Brother Orchid” (1940). Loved it all over again. When I first watched this in 2017, it was my introduction to Ann Sothern, who of course I have seen plenty of since.

Billie Burke and Ralph Morgan shill for ginger ale in 1941. Great for your next chess match with the Good Witch.

Ida Lupino, 1959

“The famed film star is directing ‘The Only Man in Town’, an episode of CBS-TV’s weekly series ‘Hotel de Paree’. Viewers can judge Ida’s behind-the -scenes talent when the show is presented on November 27.”

Megan McGurk discusses one of my faves, the underrated GERALDINE FITZGERALD in THE STRANGE AFFAIR OF UNCLE HARRY (1945), her battles with Jack Warner for better parts and how she kept one of Hollywood's biggest secrets. Ep 84: Geraldine Fitzgerald in The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry (1945)

Geraldine Fitzgerald fought with studio boss Jack Warner for better parts. She refused to play by the rules of stardom and ultimately walked out of Hollywood in 1946. Although her career never matched

Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in “The Gay Divorcée” (1934).

So many great photos of these two dancing, but this is perhaps my favorite. It captures the joyful essence of their partnership.

I’m about an hour into “The Dark Corner” (1946) and haven’t yet figured out if Mark Stevens’ private eye character is putting on an unconvincing tough guy act or if Mark Stevens himself is putting on an unconvincing tough guy act. Either way I think it works for the movie so far.

Ida Lupino on the air, ca. 1943-44.

This is stamped Army Air Force Training Command, Santa Ana, Calif., so it is likely one of appearances on the “Soldiers With Wings” program. Perhaps most likely June 7, 1944—right after D-Day—since that one was on the Blue network.
