Every worker in every industry deserves a union, and tech right now is having a clear demonstration of how our lack of unions hurts us.
I just heard an exec say that it was "unfortunate" that we couldn't fire people faster in other parts of the world because of labor protections. Sit with that for a moment.
In the US unions are one of our very very few tools to give us any chance at all.
We need strong unions to push back against this sort of callous insensitivity backed by unchecked greed.

California bans non-compete agreements and it means that if an employer wants to keep you, they need to have policies that promote retention, and not just a threat over your head in the form of a non-compete. This means policies like fair pay, good management, employee-focused plans, and creating opportunities for growth need to be part of a business plan, not just the power to be able to put someone out of work because they left your business.
Also, in states that ban non-competes, a worker is still prohibited from taking confidential information or clear trade secrets.
This is a move in the right direction in the empowerment of workers.
