The Era of Mastodon

How communities are decentralizing social networking, no billionaires required. With the mass exodus of Twitter users following Elon Musk’s takeover, alternative platforms are gaining popularity among these ‘digital refugees’. The leading choice for many is Mastodon, free and open-source self-hosted social networking. Why is it growing so fast, and

The decision to focus on the needs of the hosts we incubate and are already in deep relationship to was a difficult one, but we feel it is important in order to prepare the platform to be able to scale in a next phase with an influx of fiscal hosts that we do not incubate.
4. HOSTS: We'll scale usage by refining the platform to allow the hosts we incubate to grow as well as selectively incubating new ones. Our greatest success has been to incubate nonprofits which serve as fiscal hosts. These are interdependent by design sharing staff & resources.
3. PLATFORM: We co-design our platform with/alongside our users and communities. We'll strengthen our foundations, including building toward a more coherent and cohesive vision for the platform. We'll improve our UX and share our work in alignment with our open design philosophy.
2. COMMUNITY: We’ll continue to be values-driven, share best practices and invest in our commons oriented approach. We'll support learning initiatives: @o_c_foundation Solidarity School, @OpenSourceColl @SustainOSS, @all4climatedao Resilience Academy @SocialChangeAg trainings.
1. TEAM: We are still a software company but we are also a network of nonprofits + fiscal host incubator. We must grow Operations, HR/Care, Comms, and Support. We will prioritize clarifying our teams' comms & processes, retaining the freedom to work on what is needed within them.
The next phase is about getting ready to scale. We'll focus on maturing and streamlining our platform and improving how we work across teams. We believe we are poised for immense growth; and so we want to be able to scale in a thoughtful and sustainable way:
In 2020, we reached product-market fit with money management and fundraising platform + fiscal hosting as a service. We did this by incubating a small cohort of Fiscal Hosts, including @OC_Europe @OpenSourceColl @o_c_foundation.
We grew +5x in the past 2 years and @o_c_foundation and @OpenSourceColl 3x in 2022 alone. We went from: ~$17k/month in 2019 to ~$150k/month today; supporting ~3,000 Collectives in 2019 to ~15,000 Collectives today; a small team of 5 to 30.
