Just got back from the Society of Professional Journalists Region 1 Conference, where I was on a panel about the effects AI-based tools may have on journalism. Also got a chance to meet US Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, who told me that he’d like to reform the Supreme Court but Congress doesn’t have the votes to impeach Justice Clarence Thomas.

Man, I *wish* I had these accomplishments! (screenshot from Bing AI chat)
The best AI hallucinations are when I ask the new Bing to write a cover letter based on my LinkedIn profile and it invents a bunch of fake accomplishments for me.

Every journalist should read @tomscocca's thorough and devastating critique of the New York Times' "old-fashioned newspaper crusade" against young trans people: https://popula.com/2023/01/29/the-worst-thing-we-read-this-week-why-is-the-new-york-times-so-obsessed-with-trans-kids/

Scocca convincingly argues that Times journalists are subjecting trans issues to a double standard.

THE WORST THING WE READ THIS WEEK: Why Is the New York Times So Obsessed With Trans Kids?

A question to ask. At length.

I highly advise anyone with a personal website (particularly journalists) to update it to include links to your non-Twitter social media accounts. Here's mine: https://petersterne.com

Just got this warning email from Mastodon asking me not to cross-post tweets, so I'm going to stop cross-posting tweets to Mastodon. (But I'm still going to cross-post toots to Twitter)
Vox suggests that the government can't just release Central American asylum seekers from CBP detention, because they could end up lost and confused on the streets. But I'm not sure that's a good enough reason to keep people detained. https://www.vox.com/2019/4/11/18290677/border-immigration-illegal-asylum-central-america-mexico-trump
The border is in crisis. Here’s how it got this bad.

There really is something unprecedented — and deadly — happening at the US-Mexico border right now. But the threat is to migrants themselves.

Pelosi is right that the situation involves a bad actor in the region. It also involves Iran. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/20/world/middleeast/iran-us-drone.html
Trump Approves Strikes on Iran, but Then Abruptly Pulls Back

Military and diplomatic officials still expected a strike as of 7 p.m. Thursday in retaliation for Iran shooting down an unmanned American drone.
