Many solid recommendations already in this thread.
A few things not mentioned enough:
Matrix as decentralized, secure messenger
Mastodon as decentralized Twitter alternative
Passbolt and KeepassX as open source password manager alternatives
Vivaldi if you want a Chrome based browser, LibreWolf for Firefox based
Filen and Syncthing for cloud storage & syncing (only read about both, have not tried them yet)
Floccus to keep bookmarks in sync
VeryCrypt for encrypting volumes in file containers (good support on all operating systems), if you are only on Linux LUKS/ext4 will do. Not FOSS but love Cryptomator for keeping encrypted files stored in cloud storage (as it does not create a single large volume but each file encrypted separately which is ideal for cloud storage)
FreeTube as desktop YouTube interface, NewPipe and Tubular on Android (saw another -Pipe mention in the thread too… there are many similar alternative interfaces)
Woohooo! Works like a charm!!!
It’s mostly small things that I am so used to that makes Boost so great. Thank you for porting it to Mastodon!
Same. Today the user spamming 7 different memes was the last drop in my bucket.
Since unsubbing it is a so much better experience
Albeit a bit more pricey I love the Garmin Forerunner Smartwatches. There is a very wide variety at many different price points, no subscription and access to all data, integrates well with other services. Not sure about the OLED versions but I love the non OLED ones. Touch display, color (although not as vibrant), smartphone connectivity (e.g. notifications) and even payment (credit card on the watch, no phone needed)… with all that the battery still lasts about 2 weeks.
Sorry for shilling. There was a time when I hated Garmin. But their watches have come a long way.
Sadly appliances with useful dimming options are getting very rare.
In the same boat as OP and other commenters: electrical tape and sharpies FTW
