IMPORTANT TOOT. As you may have heard, thanks to the UK gov't, voter suppression is underway. Citizen Card are issuing police approved photo ID cards to anyone between ages 18 - 64. Use code FREEVOTERID. Please spread this information far & wide and help anyone you know who needs it to get theirs. The Tories must NOT be allowed to stop us from voting.

Someone gave me great advice when I started here. Don’t be a wallflower, just scrolling through your timeline. Boost the posts that made you stop a moment. Say hello to others. You’ll be an “old-timer” in a few days. Don’t just follow all the same people who are like you. Use your filter to not see topics that wear you down. Visit other countries through their photos. This place is what WE make it. Let’s build a real community. #newbies #welcome
@LadySG yes, I’m still trying to get my head around it! Thank you for the additional landscape.

An early observation of A Twitter Emigrant: my feed here this morning is filled with the most beautiful photos of landscapes across Britain. I don’t follow these people (that has since changed) but I guess there is an algorithm that puts them there? It’s a stunning way to start my day. Thank you, Mastodon communities!

"What I’m finding most satisfying about Mastodon, and I’m seeing a lot of other journalists feel this, is that it actually forces you to ask and confront some of these questions and to make active choices. Even if Mastodon were to remain Twitter’s very tiny stepbrother, I would still like to be part of a Mastodon journalist community because I think we got lazy as a field, and we let Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, and, god help us, Elon Musk decide..."

Mastodon’s Moment – The Markup

A conversation with Adam Davidson

I don't want to just be posting about numbers like a clock, but the 2 million mark of monthly active users across the network is a pretty big deal. This is going big numbers! Shout out to all the server operators who are absorbing this wave.

Twitter emboldened people with outrageously bad takes or racist & bigoted views to share them for the rush of a viral tweet. It silenced already marginalized voices through threats & intimidation.

Twitter rewarded narcissism with follows & gave tremendous power to people least deserving of leadership roles or equipped for public service.

It was never the “town square” but often the mob with pitchforks & torches. If #Twitter falls, democracy & humanity will be better off. #TwitterMigration

Hi all! I am also an emigrant from the overheating Twitterland. I was not a big content generator because Twitter always had a bit of a vindictive feel. But I loved to “listen” and share content that felt meaningful and important to me. I love the ethos of Mastodon and Toot so far and am hoping I feel more comfortable creating content and sharing my own thoughts than I did previously.
