Blasted Rage Against the Machine today. It was a fitting listen.
After much thought I've moved away from @protonprivacy for my drive, calendar and email. The difficult part is email so I finally set up my own domain and have anything sent to my proton address it will be forwarded to my new domain.
Have to get my 44 year old boiler replaced. The company we tend to use for services like these use to give a 30 day price guarantee and now due to the threat of tarrifs they have switched to a 7 day price guarantee. Even then they are still considering changing to only a same day price guarantee. Thanks Trump!
MAGA folks, I’m sorry that you feel betrayed now, but to quote YOU, facts don’t care about your feelings.
ToS;DR helps people read complicated ToS online...and they just released an app on F-Droid for anyone who missed it, congrats @ToSDR 👀
I have students who are afraid to come to class because of ICE. I have students deleting their social media presence for fear they're being surveilled, looking for excuses to deport them. Five UMass students have had visas revoked: https://www.umass.edu/news/article/immigration-actions-affecting-students-umass-sponsored-visas

🚨 Florida’s new “Social Media Use by Minors” bill (SB 868/HB 743) has a chilling twist: it demands platforms create backdoors to decrypt private messages.

That means:
🔓 End-to-end encryption may be turned off

💣 All users may face weaker security

EFF warns this is a dangerous precedent that risks everyone’s online safety. Legislating away encryption doesn’t protect kids — it jeopardizes all of us.

Florida’s New Social Media Bill Says the Quiet Part Out Loud and Demands an Encryption Backdoor

At least Florida’s SB 868/HB 763, “Social Media Use By Minors” bill isn’t beating around the bush when it states that it would require “social media platforms to provide a mechanism to decrypt end-to-end encryption when law enforcement obtains a subpoena.” Usually these sorts of sweeping mandates...

My goal to ditch "big tech" in 2025

- moved to Linux
- install @GrapheneOS
- installed @ente
- installed @notesnook
- joined Mastodon, Pixelfed and Loops
- playing with NextCloud
- using @protonprivacy for email and passwords
- using @firefox and @thunderbird
- installed @signalapp, but finding it difficult to get others to move over

- my only Facebook friend is my wife (keeping it as I run pages for work and looking for a work around)
- deleted Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat.
- going to delete my gmail accounts this week as I've not used them since February for email.

Any advice on #FLOSS apps and services?
