Just finished this & oh my goodness if it didn't put me through every emotional wringer there is. I went into it expecting Midsommar but not creepy. I got a great big empathy bomb. So for this reason, I think everyone possible should read it. Especially my fellow Americans in this wretched year of 2025.

All that & it's also a great story and terrific on the sentence level. I know it has been/is gonna be adapted for a film but I can't imagine the resulting film having anything like this impact.

The notion of perfect victims only makes more victims because no one is perfect. And no one should need to think they need to be perfect to be taken seriously, or to get help to get away from someone who is exploiting them.

These "imperfections" also allow abusers to fail to see themselves as real sources of harm.

"well what if she was 17" you might hear such a person say as they negotiate and deflect.

In reality the victims of child trafficking may be struggling with substance abuse, mental health issues, unwanted pregnancies, they may be queer teens, very poor, or have had "trouble with the law" (think petty theft, underage drinking etc.)

These extra challenges can be used by the people who victimize them to coerce, control and keep them for asking for help.

Programs that address these issues are kind of critical to addressing exploitation.

If you were someone who was worried about that.

They started removing asphalt from the street across from my house at 5pm. They seem to be finishing up now at 7:18. My car is in the street because I was leaving my driveway open for a plumber, who hadnโ€™t arrived at the arranged time of 5pm. Maybe just as well due to traffic. I donโ€™t think anyone has hit my car, I did ask a worker early on if I should move it. The giant dump truck made me nervous.
We bought some baskets to sort each persons washing into. Things are not exactly going to plan. Well not our plan anyways! #CatsOfMastodon

Got a meeting with the local food bank here shortly.

One other person and myself from the food rescue group are meeting with the food bank to sort out where they're currently doing food rescue from. A couple reasons behind this:

1) We dont want to duplicate efforts. If they're already rescuing food, then we can move on to the next place.
2) If they are rescuing food but not all of it (say they're only grabbing canned food but not bread from a bakery) we can close the gap.
3) If they've got an agreement in place but need help with logistics (pick up and drop off), we can assist there.

Should be a good meeting. Lots of folks in town trying to feed each other.

Does anyone know if the person who came up with the phrase, "One Hit Wonder," ever came up with any other phrases?
People should probably thank me for some of the stuff I decide not to post.

@EricAlper Once Upon A Time I had a computer that dual booted into two different Windows versions (one was for running ancient games IIRC). Each operating system thought it needed to do the clock adjustment, so by the time I'd booted both, over the course of a few days, the computer adjusted itself by TWO hours.
