I confess I have qualms about this story and its headline.

Both the subhead and the page one text proclaim that this young lawyer was accused of sending racist messages - such a message appears in the page one text but buried in the story is the response that one of her co-workers made up fake messages to smear her.

As currently published in nytimes.com, the much longer subhead refers only to “controversy” and racism is not mentioned in the first screenful of text.
