"Checking in on the whole FGC writing thing"

It's been two months since the layoff and I've been writing almost every day. This one is mostly about returning to the craft of writing, and looking at the economics of writing in a video-driven world.

Figured I'd use Fridays for more personal posts about my own learning process, for fighting games, writing, and other stuff.

"How do I pick up a complicated fighting game without getting overwhelmed?"

On learning one day at a time, teaching for longevity, and practicing to be a perpetual beginner. We often try to optimize for maximum learning efficiency, and lose the fun in the process.

Wrote a short one about how I'm practicing for tournaments these days: the lobby stream sesh is back, baby.

While I love playing long sets, I needed something to get me back in the tournament grindset, so I'm back on winner-stays lobbies with punishing wait times.

Learning to play the game is one thing, but learning how to use different play formats and sessions to create different outcomes in your gameplay is some seriously powerful shit, and I am grateful for my experience in sports for showing me how to construct intentional training routines in FGs.

"The C stands for Consumer"

On the new(ish) wave of consumerism in fighting games, how the tone of the conversation has changed, and tips on avoiding tourist traps. Another reminder that talking about fighting games and playing them are two separate hobbies.

https://www.patreon.com/posts/c-stands-for-153928152

I have curated my own fighting game spaces so effectively that every time I stick my head out to see how the general population is living it's a real eye-opener for me.

My work will always be meant for the people who play fighting games because that's where I find the beauty.

If you can, support my work at the Patreon (patreon.com/pattheflip) or buy my latest book From Masher to Master 2 (patrickmiller.itch.io). Writing about fighting games is my job now, and every little bit helps. You can also sign up as a free member to keep up on new posts.
"Inside the Fighting Game April Jam with Andrea Demetrio"

Interviewed Andrea Demetrio about the Fighting Game April Jam 2026! We talk about making indie FGs, why they're hard for game jams, and how to get started if you've never done it before.

Game jams are a super cool way to jump headfirst into game development and learn a bunch of things very quickly! I participated in a few game jams before working in dev professionally and they were real fun and a great way to get started. Hope we see that entry list hit 300 before it starts!
