@siriusfox I am okay! Thank you for checking! Just off ANS lately!
@marcoarment I sent you this on bsky, but for ¥917 or $7 for 6.5oz, you can buy your sunscreen directly from Amazon Japan. AmazonGlobal shipping will get it to you for like $30 per order, so you can bulk buy to offset the cost. AmazonGlobal to California is usually DHL and arrives in 2 days, but maybe a little longer for New York. It works with US billing and shipping, but you do need to make an Amazon Japan account. UI is English once you set your preferences. https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/SPMUV-Large-Capacity-Planned-Product/dp/B0DT616H7R

@gruber I did the Apple Account migration process, but on at least one device, I’m still prompted to provide the password for my now-merged account and 2FA when updating apps. Also, purchased apps do not seem to actually exist on this device from the sub-account. I waited a couple days to see if it would resolve itself, but it didn’t. I fear the solution is to sign out of iCloud and back in but I don’t want to do that for obvious reasons.

“In the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, when everything came to a standstill, the availability of information was the difference between life and death for many people. While some lives were saved by the information they had beforehand, others may have lost their lives because of it.

There must have been many lives that could have been saved if the information had been available immediately afterwards.
We, modern people, trust our lives to information.
Without information, action is delayed.”

I’m not going to say that Watch Duty’s number one feature is a push notification service that says “hey your neighborhood is on fire” but it absolutely is.

Watch Duty uses Recurly for payments too, which natively supports payment methods in different regions, as well as tax and compliance for collecting payments.

When I emailed NERV asking for it to be made available outside the Japanese App Store, their response was that they’ve done just that with the release of the English translation. It’s amazing how there are two different views here.

Watch Duty support *did* reply that the website still works. And that’s great, but the website doesn’t have feature parity with the apps.

No push notifications, for example.

I’m rather bitter because:

1. I’ve been a supporter of Watch Duty since its inception, and started paying at earliest opportunity.

2. This is a simple toggle switch to change in the Google Play Console / App Store Connect.

3. There is absolutely no reason for this to be region locked.

You can download the NERV app outside of Japan, because if you’re in Japan as a tourist, you shouldn’t be limited in receiving life saving information. Oh you’re interested in whether or not your house is on fire? Suck it up students, enjoy your fire.

I know of one person, studying in the US from China, who lost his place of living in the Eaton Fire. Sucks to suck I guess.

Reached out to Watch Duty, asking them to list their app in worldwide App Stores, because many international students, particularly in Los Angeles, are unable to use Watch Duty’s life saving features because they are in different App Store regions. I’m reposting their pathetic response here.

I find this rather myopic and disappointing. Many people in the US, particularly those from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong cannot download Watch Duty, because it isn’t in their regional App Store.

It also implies “these people won’t pay us anyway so we can’t help them.”

My email:

Watch Duty on iOS isn’t listed in App Stores for different regions, like Japan, Taiwan, etc. For international students and tourists in the US, these critical groups are left without access to Watch Duty. Changing App Store region requires billing information like an address and credit card in the US, and is impractical for many groups. Please list Watch Duty worldwide so that all users in the US can download and use it.

Response:

We really appreciate and can understand the interest in using Watch Duty, but at the current moment, we are solely reporting on the United States, which means the app is only available in US-based app stores for both iOS and Android.

That said, we are also only receiving US-based payments as well.

We are consistently expanding, so please stay tuned for potential expansions.
