Just started reading 'Escape from Model Land' by Erica Thompson this AM about how math models shape our society (I think). So far so good!

Tech cos love this ‘algorithmic transparency’ stuff because it allows them to refocus attention away from the business decisions driving the core functionality and intention of these recommendation algorithms (not to mention, the data collection/aggregation practices that fuel them)

The ad industry tried this with AdChoices (tiny box in the upper right hand corner of some ads, try it sometime).
