My other problem is I think a fair bit of the supposed "hard" science in "hard" sci-fi often displays, um. A dubious, shallow and/or superficial understanding of the concepts it is supposedly pontificating on?

I’m probably just overly sensitive about it since I’m not from the particular demographic most non-Australians associate with Australia? And I have read… way too much Fauxstralian fic in my time. D:

@KizzyMeowMeow Not common things anyone here would say, unless they were from very specific demographic slices.

That being said, for a very Anglo rural 1980s setting it would be more fitting?

(Ironically the one thing I’ve found that throws non-Australians more than anything else is the way we use the term “heaps”…)

@soph_sol As someone with a bunch of feathers, I had never thought of this and it made me Google the (local) answer!

(FWIW here it is legal to privately collect “naturally shed” parts of protected animals, including feathers.)

@bloodwrites Yeah. Discord is so anathema to how I like doing fandom? The fact so much stuff has moved there (… apparently?) is… meh.

Tumblr circa 2013ish was probably “peak Tumblr” for me… but that was, wow. A decade ago.

@bloodwrites I don’t even necessarily miss the porn on it per se, so much as what it felt that the fact porn was allowed there represented?

It never really got that feeling back, after the ban.
