I was reminded that Mastodon exists so heyyy in the year I was gone I got more vintage e-waste and also (probably) lupus. You win some, you lose some.
thrilling iMac update: pretty sure the optical drive IS fucked. but the one advantage to this being a pre-FireWire tray loader is that the CD-ROM is a stock part that can be replaced with pretty much any laptop-sized Matsushita IDE drive (versus the slot loaders that need much more specific parts). this is like a $20 repair, assuming I don’t want to go the netboot server route.
I thought to do this because I got a very similar error back when I was playing with hacked OS 9 on the Mac Mini. The solution was to use a different keyboard and mouse.
INCREDIBLE UPDATE, the CD-ROM is not bad, there’s something wonky about the keyboard and/or the software controlling it. I’m able to boot to the restore disc if I plug in a different keyboard!
I'm almost sorry that I have negative desire to ever appear in video content, because this very silly saga might make a good retrocomputing video. (Maybe I'll start a Medium blog about it or something.)
I like how this has gone from zero to an entire server closet in the course of two days.
It was not nominated for AFP server due to age (10.3 or 10.4 server will not be ideal as a bridge between AFP and newer protocols) and power consumption (the Raspberry Pi is way better for an always-on device).
I think the CD-ROM drive on this is fucked, which will make reinstalling the OS on a replacement hard drive interesting (this is pre-FireWire, so no target disk mode). Because I am a normal person, I’m tempted to use the G4 Mac Mini as a Netboot server.
if you’re wondering how I went from inspiration to having the iMac in hand so quickly, I found one for sale like an hour away from me
