I write code and eat software engineering for breakfast.

Passwordless Login System

Passwords are a shared-secret liability. Here is how to build a modern passwordless auth flow using Email OTP and Passkeys (WebAuthn), without storing passwords.

@simontatham 20 seconds is an excellent opportunity for push-ups, stretches or even just looking away from the computer to have your eyes focus on something further away.
AI-Generated Code Quality and the Challenges we all face

Don't Get Distracted

I’m going to tell you about how I took a job building software to kill people. But don’t get distracted by that; I didn’t know at the time.

@kepano On desktop: I used to be able to switch to reading view with a keyboard shortcut, hit Ctrl+A to select the document, then Ctrl+C to copy the rich text so I could paste the formatted/rich view into another application, but now Ctrl+A just tells me "Press Ctrl+C to copy source", so I have to click and drag to select everything THEN Ctrl+C to copy the rich text. I don't mind altering my workflow if I can continue using only keyboard shortcuts, like a "Copy as Rich Text" command. Thanks!

@kepano All links open in a new tab. Please dear lord let me set that. I never want any link or action to replace a tab. I lose content I want every day. Every. Day. For years.

Yes I know about command click.

I also *always* open all links in a new tab in my browser. Always.

I can not stress this enough: I never want a tab's content *replaced*. Ever. And on the rare time I might... I'd just close the old one after opening a new one.

Please, I beg.

Pro tip: If you are attending a crowded event in winter, wearing a well-fitting mask like an N95 can serve double duty by keeping your face warm and keeping viruses away.

(yes, transmission can still happen outdoors in crowds or with close and sustained contact to someone who is sick).
PSA: You don’t owe anyone an explanation about the health reasons why you are wearing a mask.

Badgering others about the tools they need to survive is stigmatizing and ableist, and should have no place in decent society.
A BlueSky thread by rob pike on Skyview

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software. Just fuck you. Fuck you all. I can't remember the last time I was this angry.
