A sulfur mining operation at Kawah Ijen in East Java province, Indonesia 🇮🇩 These laborers will trek over 5 km from the crater to a collection center with loads weighing between 50-100 kg on their shoulders. Most make this journey twice a day and are only paid $0.06 per kg for the sulfur carried. Around 13 tonnes of sulfur are extracted daily from the crater, it is used in sugar refineries, cosmetics, medicines and explosives.

A sulfur mining operation at the volcanic crater of Kawah Ijen, about 200m (656 ft) down from the 2,799m (9,183 ft) high Ijen volcano in East Java province, Indonesia These laborers trek over 5 km (3 miles) from the crater to a collection center with loads weighing between 50 to 100 kg (110 - 220 lbs.) on their shoulders. Most make this journey twice a day and are only paid Rp. 600 ($0.06 in 2010) per kg for the sulfur carried. Around 13 tonnes of sulfur are extracted daily from the crater which are then used in sugar refineries, cosmetics, medicines and explosives.
