Let's Play AQ-10 • results - sh.itjust.works

Thanks to everybody who took part. Now it’s time to see the results. I’ve counted up everyone’s agreements and disagreements (using some amount of reading between the lines. I didn’t count any that were unclear). The ‘autistic’ answer for each statement is indicated with bold type: statement | agree | disagree —|—|— I often notice small sounds when others do not. | 23 | 0 When I’m reading a story, I find it difficult to work out the characters’ intentions.|5|1 I find it easy to “read between the lines” when someone is talking to me.|0|6 I usually concentrate more on the whole picture, rather than the small details.|0|4 I know how to tell if someone listening to me is getting bored.|2|4 I find it easy to do more than one thing at once.|1|4 I find it easy to work out what someone is thinking or feeling just by looking at their face.|1|5 If there is an interruption, I can switch back to what I was doing very quickly.|3|4 I like to collect information about categories of things.|5|2 I find it difficult to work out people’s intentions.|4|0 So, lemmy.world/autism picked the autistic option every time and scored a perfect 10/10. Interestingly, if we weight it proportionately according to how many picked each option, we only get 6.2, barely over the threshold. Scores of 6 or over indicate possible autism spectrum disorder, so lemmy.world/autism should seriously consider the possibility that they may be autistic. (Personally, I got 8. Go me!) My intentions for running this test was it would be interesting and fun, and I think it was (One respondent was concerned I might have some undisclosed professional interest - I don’t, but thanks for looking out for the community). I think the main takeaway is that interpreting self-report questions can be really hard. Should I do another? If so, should I do anything differently?

Didn’t we already have a question like this? This is like the intersection of the Venn diagram between the one about fictional character intentions, and the one about reading subtext.

Anyway in the for column, there’s been times when I’ve been scammed or taken advantage of. And I’ve had some “[years later]… Ohhh! She was flirting with me” moments.

In against, I think I’m not bad at spotting when someone is masking distress or discomfort (tho I don’t always know what to do with that information). And out of meatspace, with time to process, I’m much better at spotting bad actors.

Going for Slightly Agree

This is one of a series of discussion posts based on questions from the AQ-10 autism test. ## 10. I find it difficult to work out people’s intentions. - Definitely Agree - Slightly Agree - Slightly Disagree - Definitely Disagree — Is this statement true for you? Can you think of any examples? Is it an easy or difficult question for you to answer? You can take the full AQ-10 test here [https://embrace-autism.com/aq-10]. And a follow up question that’s not really liftoff-specific - 2 times out of 3 I got the handle wrong on the first attempt and had to go back and edit. Does the tagged user still get the mention notification from the updated post?

I’m going tag myself in this comment to test it. First, do you get notified for self-mentions @[email protected] ?

How do you copy&paste a user handle?

How do you copy&paste a user handle? - sh.itjust.works

There is (as far as I know) no easy way to copy a user handle to mention them in a post or comment. There isn’t a UI element or menu option on a post to do this. I can go to their just page and use the share button, but then I get (for example): https://lemmy.guide/link?target=@[email protected] [https://lemmy.guide/link?target=@[email protected]] That’s not Zach’s instance, it’s mine. To get the user handle I’d have to edit out the URL part, and change to the correct instance @[email protected]. Is that how it’s supposed to work? Is the instance change thing a bug? Is there a better way I don’t know about?

Once again, it depends what they mean. What do they mean by ‘collect information’ and what do they mean by ‘categories of things’. Because I like learning about things, I like going on research dives and learning odd bits of information. But I don’t think I approach it in such a systematic way that this question suggests.

I checked against an extended version of the same test (AQ-50), and in that one, this question had some added clarification;

(e.g. types of car, types of bird, types of train, types of plant, etc.).

I could be interested in learning about any of those, but it would not be motivated by its belonging to the category. It would be if the particular car, bird, etc had some inherent interest, or was relevant to something else I was involved with

I think I Slightly Disagree

Not very quickly, no. If the task needed working memory, that will be gone. I’ll need to take a moment to reassess what I was doing and where I’m up to. If there were X,Y,Z subtasks, I’ll need to check which ones are done and which not. A long enough interruption and I might forget entirely and not return to the task at all. If someone interrupts me by trying to help, in a way that I don’t immediately understand, I find that very irritating.

Disagree. I’m leaning towards Definitely Disagree but it’s not a definite definitely haha.

Haha. I have opinions on this one. I think I’ll wait a bit before discussing it so as not to bias anyone else’s response.

Definitely Disagree
