I may be a bit slow, but today in the cafeteria was the first time that I saw students using ChatGPT for what I assume was their homework. They were clearly not doing this for the first time, they had a pretty efficient workflow going on, pasting code and output into it and copying responses into an IDE.

I couldn't stop myself from asking them about it, they said it helps a lot, and that they only trust stuff that they can execute and where the output from the compiler looks right.

As you may recall:

• The W3C is in part hosted by MIT but MIT intends to withdraw on Dec 31.
• A new W3C nonprofit needs to take over on Jan 1.
• MIT needs to transfer assets (member dues, contracts, IP…) to the new W3C for it to operate.
• I was elected to the W3C Board and am part of the negotiations.

We're two weeks away from cutover and the negotiations are going… poorly. 🧵

My techbro explaining what decentralized means while we go for a stroll and I tell him about how registering a domain name & setting up a web server & staying on top of W3C were technical skills back in 98.

His mastodon join date is years later than mine. I know what decentralized is. So does he. We use similar words but they don't have same domain specific meanings. He's all engineering/tech R&D. I'm applied & creative first.
