I noticed that too, and yeah I think it is. It sent me down a rabbit hole looking for valid sources though and it’s super depressing:
A handful of Oligarchs in Haiti, the poorest nation in the western hemisphere, didn’t want the government making them pay taxes to make life less shitty for everyone, so they funded the gangs as their own private paramilitary organizations to assassinate the prime minister (likely with the help of the man who would replace him, only for him to find out he couldn’t control the situation and got run out of the country by those very same gangs).
Now the gangs have taken over entirely, so a US oligarch (Erik Prince, brother of Betsy DeVos) and owner of multiple mercenary firms tied to war crimes (including the infamous Blackwater – now rebranded “Constellis” to escape the associations with the old name) has made a deal with the new government that he gets a percentage of taxes collected for years to come by “restoring security” but mercenaries with drones gonna do what they do and now they’re killing a lot of people without any real oversight.
