Online Hate-Speech and Disinformation in Post-Election India

Online hate speech against Muslims, Christians, Dalits, and other marginalized groups in India has long been endemic. These have often resulted in systemic and deadly violence against minorities. While election disinformation and hate speech is subjected to enhanced scrutiny, what happens when the spotlight finally moves? What are the qualitative and quantitative shifts that can be observed? What can be done by platforms when elected politicians and holders of some of the highest offices in the land are credibly accused of inciting hate both offline and online? The panel discussion focuses on the theoretical, digital, and methodological challenges of delineating and moderating hate-speech against minorities and marginalized groups on social media, bringing together perspectives from academia, industry, and civil society activists. Panelists: Farzaneh Badei, Founder, Digital Medusa Clifton D'Rozario, General Secretary, All India Lawyers' Association for Justice Raqib Hameed Naik, Founder, India Hate Lab

The Ambani Family Wedding: Crafting a 'National' Story?

Why does the mainstream media devote so much of its resources to cover a wedding and so little to cover issues of national and international importance?

Is AI-generated hate-speech about AI or the information environment? Does AI pose a unique threat to the reliability of information online or is it just a continuation of existing challenges?

I try to theorize on the basis of a recent example.

AI generated hate-speech & the French elections

AI generated hate-speech and hate-imagery doesn't have to be 'believable' to work. It simply has to exist in the information environment.

My recent paper critiques colonial metaphors and suggests an alternative theoretical framework.

And then there's evaluation, or lack thereof:

Google is advertizing Gemini as an everything machine---a general purpose model that can be used in many different ways. In other words: sthg that cannot be evaluated, since it doesn't have a specific purpose.

What stands in for evaluation are "benchmarks", but these benchmarks lack construct validity. What are they supposed to be measuring? What shows that they do measure that? How does that relate to the intended use case of the technology?
