Carnival embodies the principle of constant renewal, the cyclical nature of time. It breaks down the boundaries between different levels of social reality, radically rethinking established forms of life.
Totalitarian projects present time as linear, reality as static, and human nature as fixed, but most importantly because of the way they treat laughter.
The fact that totalitarian projects were deeply theatrical does not make them carnivalesque.
I'm interested in the relationship between carnivalesque, theatricality, and fascism.
If we consider fascist and totalitarian projects through the prism of their relation to Rabelais, as Bakhtin does, we can see their radical, if I may say so, anti-carnivalism.

Scott Thompson began his email after the first Bakhtin group by describing what has happened when the carnivalesque entered politics, and politics itself went mad.
"Since Donald Trump was elected for a second term in office, I’ve come across lots on the left calling him a ‘clown’ or saying that ‘they’ve made the clown a king’ (and not just for a single day!)"

Marxist theory has by now largely abandoned the (seriously flawed) notion of the ‘mode of production’, but doing so has only encouraged a trend to abandon much of what was radical about it and naturalize capitalist categories. This article argues a better conceived notion of a mode of production - one that recognizes the primacy of human production.

David was able to see genuine pioneers among people who, for various reasons, were not known to the general public (mainly because their views contradicted the dominant narrative) and to expose their ideas in his books. Hudson came up with the idea of debtors and creditors instead of class struggle.
