When I was young, I used to think people could have rational discussions and disagree in civil ways.

I think it may also be helpful to contrast the oft used accusations.

Compassion cannot be rightly given apart from truth telling.
Power cannot be rightly exercised apart from truth telling.
Compassion at the expense of truth is unrigteousness.
Power at the expense of truth is unrighteousness.

Let the reader understand.
