I post about photography, Linux, and books mainly. I don’t know what I’m talking about.

New post from Joe Mullin, EFF's Sr. Policy Analyst: Publishers say they’re blocking the Internet Archive because they fear AI scraping. This is a misguided notion: it won’t stop AI, but it will erase the web’s historical record.

Blocking the Internet Archive Won’t Stop AI, But It Will Erase the Web’s Historical Record

Imagine a newspaper publisher announcing it will no longer allow libraries to keep copies of its paper. That’s effectively what’s begun happening online in the last few months. The Internet Archive—the world’s largest digital library—has preserved newspapers since it went online in the mid-1990s....

@hobbs also noticed this, I know they recently acquired Depop, which had a “repop” button. Unsure if related but seems coincidental.
@robin_wren I was wondering when mistakes would start being embraced as evidence a human created something. Seems like it’s starting :)
Recent house projects

My undiagnosed ADHD has finally decided it’s now time to work on house stuff instead of Linux stuff

I wish we could have a real discussion instead of just saying “LLM bad”. I think there’s real potential to take back control in some ways.
@latenightlinux there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism. Period. I know I’m in the minority but I think it is possible to use it for good. For example, if everyone used it to build their own website instead of going on social media, we could decentralize and democratize the internet in ways that could severely impact the tech oligarchs who control us currently. Though I’m sure I’m simply dreaming, the damage is likely done.
I know I’m supposed to hate #ai but is it possible to use AI to be an #anticapitalist ? #llm #llms #capitalism #anticapitalism #technofeudalism

Jeff Bezos is saying the quiet part out loud. They want to kill local computing.

You will own nothing and be happy. You will rent your computing power from the cloud. You pay a subscription for the privilege of using a computer.

AI demand is artificially spiking DRAM prices and Big Tech is pushing "AI PCs," the squeeze is on to force us into a rental model.

Reject this future.

Keep your hardware local.

Run #Linux

Own your data.

The "cloud" is just a landlord for your data.

Jeff Bezos said the quiet part out loud — hopes that you'll give up your PC to rent one from the cloud

Amazon's Jeff Bezos once revealed how he thinks of local PC hardware as antiquated, ready to be replaced by cloud options. Will DRAM prices make it come true?
