Hope needs compassionate action. Best to be compassionate anyway.

Many self-avowed 'critical thinkers', especially on Twitter, seem to not think critically.

This is also why the analemma exists (there's your word of the day). If you take a picture of the Sun in the sky at the exact same clock time every day, it will trace out a figure-8 pattern over the course of a year.

If you want to play more, this is my favourite sun motion simulator that I use in all my classes: https://astro.unl.edu/naap/motion3/animations/sunmotions.html

Always nice to start your day with a bit of orbital dynamics (which I guess is literally how days start)

It was -35C (-40 with windchill, apparently) this morning in my part of Saskatchewan.

Since tomorrow is perihelion (Earth's closest approach to the Sun), it's a great time to remind everyone that seasons are caused by Earth's tilted spin axis, not by proximity to the sun!

Happy Perihelion Day, to those who celebrate (I personally am celebrating the fact that the December solstice is currently close to perihelion - otherwise it could be EVEN COLDER)

MAGA Trumpers are now doxxing prosecutors and staff involved in the Trump classified documents case, leading to harassment and threats.
They must be stopped. Our democracy cannot be held hostage by stochastic terrorism.

Yes, the Courtโ€™s affirmative action decision is worse than you thought.

The Supreme Courtโ€™s Conservatives Are Breaking History and Our Future

Perhaps the most grotesque aspect of the affirmative action opinion lies in its effort to drain the moral and legal force of Brown v. Board of Education.

Exciting news, friends! I recently had a thought-provoking conversation with the brilliant Robert Reich, where we delved into the intricate web of late-stage capitalism, wealth inequality, and the imperative for change. We explored the myths surrounding billionaires and the real factors contributing to the wealth gap.

Big Questions With Former Secretary Of Labor Robert Reich

Professor, author, lawyer, political commentator and staffer for four Presidents, Robert Reich answers questions from George Takei.

The Big Picture

โ€œLiberal, liberal, liberal.โ€ I remember when Ronald Reagan used the term as a slur during a speech in 1988. That dreaded โ€œLโ€ word. Many Americans lump โ€œliberalโ€ together with the words โ€œbleeding heartโ€ and incorrectly believe it means people who are just plain soft on things like spending and crime.

But true liberal values are actually what hold our democracy together and the loss of them threatens our future as a democratic republic. Todayโ€™s piece looks at the state of Florida under Governor Ron DeSantis and how it is a prime example of the illiberal threat to our system. Illiberal Floridaโ€”Ron DeSantis' War on Freedom and Democracy

Republicans in the Sunshine State, led by Governor Ron DeSantis, mount repeated attacks on fundamental freedoms.
