Conference Family Survey

Hello! We are Family co-Chairs for the Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium (PETS), 2024 in Bristol, UK. We are preparing a free of charge and on-site childcare service at PET 2024, and need to estimate the needs of our research community. This short survey is based on the survey created by the Family co-chairs for the ACM CHI 2023 conference to learn about the experiences and needs of families and caregivers in academia (from any community) when visiting conferences. The survey will only take 1-5 minutes. Demographic information is optional but will help us to better the determine the needs of researchers in our community and beyond. Collected data and insights will only ever be published in strictly anonymized and / or aggregated form, if at all. Your answers will be extremely valuable in our mission to make academia more family friendly.

An Ontology of Dark Patterns Knowledge: Foundations, Definitions, and a Pathway for Shared Knowledge-Building

Deceptive and coercive design practices are increasingly used by companies to extract profit, harvest data, and limit consumer choice. Dark patterns represent the most common contemporary amalgamation of these problematic practices, connecting designers, technologists, scholars, regulators, and legal professionals in transdisciplinary dialogue. However, a lack of universally accepted definitions across the academic, legislative and regulatory space has likely limited the impact that scholarship on dark patterns might have in supporting sanctions and evolved design practices. In this paper, we seek to support the development of a shared language of dark patterns, harmonizing ten existing regulatory and academic taxonomies of dark patterns and proposing a three-level ontology with standardized definitions for 65 synthesized dark patterns types across low-, meso-, and high-level patterns. We illustrate how this ontology can support translational research and regulatory action, including pathways to extend our initial types through new empirical work and map across application domains.

Feedback is very welcome from all AI actors (companies, researchers, academics, associations, legal and technical counsels, public administrations, etc.) to the CNIL - Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés public consultation on the creation of datasets for the development of artificial intelligence systems.

Deadline: 16 November 2023

Artificial intelligence: the CNIL opens a consultation on the creation of datasets for AI

Many stakeholders informed the CNIL of their questions regarding the application of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to artificial intelligence (AI), in particular since the emergence of generative AI systems. The analysis of these systems shows that their development is compatible with  privacy issues. Moreover, taking this imperative into account will enable the emergence of ethical devices, tools and applications that are faithful to European values.
