I know this might sound rich coming from a known member of a large organization, but you should prioritize building community with your neighbors over joining some big org. An organization can give you the feeling of being larger and stronger than you really are. 8000 people spread out across the country can feel absolutely massive on a discord or forum. But when it comes time to actually do anything, that nonprofit organization which felt so massive and strong only yesterday feels incapable of doing much besides sharing memes and getting into debates on forums.

Whereas 20 people all living in the same small area can be quite effective either in the case of political action, or when the most vulnerable in your neighborhood need defending. Imagine a text group (signal group ideally) where people send things like "ICE vehicles spotted in the neighborhood" or "Lots of cop cars seen on [major street]" or even "They're threatening to tear down Larry's tent, can anyone come by to help?"

It's scary. Start small. Maybe try to exchange numbers with every person with a pride flag or a free Palestine sign in their window near you. Let them know that you're trying to get people in the neighborhood in contact with one another so you can take care of each other. It can spread and grow from there.
