A smart component trick for adjusting spacing in Devanagari conjuncts while keeping automatic alignment intact in Glyphs

https://muthunedumaran.com/2025/12/30/a-spacer-trick-for-conjunct-spacing-in-glyphs/

Noticed a Tamil text-handling issue in Qt Framework’s Text Editor Control (possibly Windows-level Unicode handling).

When using Left Arrow or Shift+Left Arrow, cursor moves or selects multiple Tamil letters instead of one. Example: In the word "செய்தேன்" try to select “தே” also highlights “ய்” (see video).

Mouse selection works correctly. Hope Qt, Windows, & Unicode teams can check this.

Saw this after my walk in the park today. What could have caused the கால் (vowel sign aa) in வெங்காயம் to drop down from the baseline 🤔
தொ - This is composed with த (U+0BA4) + ொ (U+0BCC). The two part vowel sign decomposes as ெ (U+0BC6) and ா (U+0BBE). CoreText accepts only this order but Harfbuzz accepts the vowel signs in the reverse order too. Which one is doing it right?

The dot above the Tamil letter ப is, ‘pulli’, a non-spacing mark, positioned with GPOS. When the character spacing in the text is reduced, InDesign handles it really well. Maintains consistent spacing between letters, ignoring the zero width mark - but not Pages, TextEdit or Word. I checked Word for Mac. I believe Word for Windows will be the same. Is this just a bug or simply unsupported?
Postscript is gone, long live TrueType

Postscript is all but gone, and today, newer font standards such as TrueType and OpenType rule the roost. Here's how we got from desktop PostScript in the early '80s to today.
