This well-known effect of team size should feature prominently in any discussion about development team "productivity". Mysteriously, it rarely gets mentioned.
If "productivity" is the value a customer gets from every $ invested in development, then this is the biggest factor in that by a country mile. I used to use the term "development heat (DH)" to describe the $ lost to this effect. And I've seen DH > 99% in banks and gov't.
