I have been reading Hickman’s Hinterlands
[https://shagbark.substack.com/p/how-to-live-on-432-a-month-in-america] and am
intrigued with the idea of trying to escape American Money Culture by moving to
someplace relatively cheap and obscure. This is not (IMO) some post-apocalypse,
hunter gatherer lifestyle, just going to some neglected place with a lower cost
of living. The trick is, how to take advantage of it? Still need some money. How
does one make a reliable, lower income without either demeaning yourself or
constantly worrying about how to pay the bills? The local economies in these
places are not too lucrative - that’s why they are cheap. One can publish online
as Hickman does, but I can’t write that well. Selling crafts might be an option.
Any other ideas?

I got my new router working. - Lemmy.World
Maybe this is too nerdy for this group. I got an OpenWRT ONE router, replaced
the old TP-Link one I had. The bad press got to me. The new one is fast, I could
not believe how much faster things like downloading files is now. The worst part
was that I had picked out a complicated password with lots of punctuation, and
typing that on phones and on-screen keyboards for TVs and game consoles was
painful. Also I pinged Google, and got an IPv6 response for the first time.

Seems to me that it’s mostly revenge; dismantling any government agency that has
ever thwarted him, or that the right wing does not like. But, I certainly don’t
trust his motives…

I can’t figure out why: usually it’s because I’ve been doing some dirty job,
working on the car, planting, etc, but I have not been doing any of those

Obviously for Northern Hemisphere folks here. Where I am, it has been mostly
below freezing, a little snow but not enough to pe pretty or good to play in.
It’s mostly indoor activities. I work out at the gym, play board games, have
random get togethers with friends. What do you do?

I, personally, like to take the opportunity to express aspirations: not just
trying to stop doing things I feel are harmful, but also to try new things or
practice positive things more. A couple from me: - Avoid sarcasm when dealing
with people, especially strangers, it does not go over well when they don’t get
the joke - Do something positive, helpful, and non-criminal to counter the right
wing political trend. (granted, this one needs more detail) How about you?

It went from rain to snow overnight, got even colder, and froze hard. This
morning there were about 2 inches of very rough ice on the car. For some reason,
it always collects the most at the bottom of the windshield, right where it’s
most important to see. The ice was about as hard as the glass. I broke one
scraper trying to clean it, started the engine and left the defroster on for a
few minutes. After driving around for a while, and one mighty crash as the
glacier on the roof let go, you would hardly know it was there at all. I have a
garage bay I could use, but it’s full of other stuff, and I only park the car in
there during disaster level storms.
