Probably the single clearest, most important recent paper on Covid.

BREAKING: PolyBio-supported study reveals long-term immune and metabolic damage after COVID-19 infection New preprint study reveals profound & long-lasting biological disruptions that can follow a SARS-CoV-2 infection, i.e. changes connected to altered metabolism & cancer-associated epigenetic changes https://polybio.org/polybio-supported-study-reveals-long-term-immune-and-metabolic-damage-after-covid-19-infection/

So how might the success of Figshare (for both the company & its users) help us rethink possibilities that won't be giving over design or governance control to for-profits? Perhaps Knowledge Commons' recently announced KCWorks repository hosting service might provide an option. Given that they just had federal grants terminated, the question is whether they can offer a similar platform, w/ compatible affordances, at a similar cost to libraries.

Work on new KC Profiles continues to advance. The chart is looking good in our colour scheme. Got it rendering responsively for mobile now, too 😁. The CiteProc rendering of citation styles is fairly snappy, too.
Much to be done on the colour scheme, but today's tech work was graphing KC Works deposits on members' profiles.
Yesterday and this morning I added full dynamic citation rendering using CSL to the in-dev, forthcoming Knowledge Commons Profiles app. It's working well!

So now people I've helped use Trove in the past are contacting me because they've received a confusing email from Trove about their API keys and and worried that they've done something wrong and their research is in trouble.

Slow handclap NLA. Nice work.

New forthcoming Thomas Pynchon novel!

"Milwaukee 1932, the Great Depression going full blast, repeal of Prohibition just around the corner, Al Capone in the federal pen, the PI business shifting from labor-management relations to the more domestic kind."

Had a horrific night reaction, for the first time, to a Covid booster jab. Was shivering uncontrollably. Woke up and rheumatoid arthritis was going crazy - horribly painful all over. Now I'm boiling hot and feel like I have been hit over the head.

Still better than a month in hospital with Covid.

The Royal Society is dead

A few months ago, Dorothy Bishop resigned her fellowship in the Royal Society in protest at Elon Musk's continuing fellowship. This was a highly principled stand. Eight weeks ago, Steven Curry wrote an open letter to the President of the Royal Society asking him to explain how Musk's activities and pronouncements can be considered compatible with the Society's code of conduct.
