Concentrations of these pollutants mix into the atmosphere as wind-borne toxic dust. People living in the lower parts of the river basins and former shore zones ingest pollutants drinking local water and inhaling contaminated dust. These toxins are absorbed by plants & livestock where they accumulate and enter the food chain driving higher rates of certain cancers, liver, kidney, & eye problems, respiratory illnesses including tuberculosis digestive disorders, anemia, and infectious diseases.
The Aral Sea is considered an example of ecosystem collapse. Around 1960 it was 3.5 times sweeter than ocean water. Today, after overuse and abuse of its waters and the river deltas feeding into it, the salinity of the remaining waters is 11x more saline than ocean water. The receding sea has left huge deserted tracts of sand, salt, heavy-metals from weapons testing, polychlorinated biphenyls from industrial waste and HCH, TCCD, DDT from agricultural projects.
