There's a spam account that keeps popping up from different servers, with different handles – but the name and picture are always the same.

We've been suspending them daily for the last while. Feel free to block and report.

- We're blocking spam accounts
- We're "limiting" origin servers that show up more than once
- We're keeping an eye on other solutions (so far, nothing great)

You can:
- Please report spam you see. It's in the "more" three-dot menu below a post. That's the only way we find accounts/servers to block.
- (if you want) Turn off notifications from people you don't follow, or people who don't follow you.

I know these options aren't great. A real solution would need to be built into Mastodon. 🫤

Some (but not all) of us are getting hit by a (fediverse-wide) wave of spam, and there are no signs of it slowing down.

The spam takes advantage of a current weakness in the fediverse:

- There are many small (sometimes abandoned) servers with open registration
- We can't preemptively block servers we don't know about
- There's no automated spam detection
- None of the spamming accounts are on front-end.social, so there's little we can do.

But we're trying to stay on top of what we *can* do…

We removed the custom styles for image alt text and private mentions, now that Mastodon provides both. 🥳

Hey fellow front-end.social people (Cc: @mods)!

How do you feel about us starting to make changes to the custom CSS on our instance?

I'm toying with the following (to stop my hand-meat under my thumb from sending me to different sections when I'm just trying to reach a link on the left side of my phone): Moving the menu to the bottom on mobile widths.

What do you think? The missing links are still available by swiping.

Looking for my next frontend developer role! Must be remote, I'm really interested in accessibility, maintainability and ethical, impactful work.

Please boost, DMs open :)

Current options for growth:

- Open, unmoderated
- Moderated registration: takes time/effort & a sense of criteria. Otherwise why bother?
- Member invites: no way to set limits, so basically open/unmoderated if people share widely
- Admin-only invites: Constant email/dm requests, so basically moderated registration, but *personal*. Could be passed out in a more nuanced way, maybe? Some admins use an automated script for that?

Our experience after 1-2 months:

- Host providers help a lot
- There are some $ costs, but people are willing to chip in (totally manageable so far)
- There's moderation effort, but at this size it's manageable (more emotional stress than time)

BUT: there's more interest than servers & we're all volunteers learning as we go. So the rate of unchecked growth has everyone skittish. No one wants to discover a cliff by launching over it.

We need more small servers & tools for slow growth!

Are you sitting down? Here goes!

44% of all websites that exist right now run on WordPress.

Right now, connecting a WordPress site to the Fediverse is just a matter of installing this plug-in.

If just a fraction of WordPress sites connect to ActivityPub, then the network effect of the Fediverse will eclipse Big Social.

ActivityPub

Connect your site to the Open Social Web and let millions of users follow, share, and interact with your content from Mastodon, Pixelfed, and more.
