The European Cloud Situation at the end of 2025 - Bert Hubert's writings

As the year draws to an end now is a good time to review where we are with Europe’s cloud situation, and what has been achieved. One thing is certain, a lot has happened, and also quite a lot has become clearer. tl;dr: Great strides have been made in 2025, especially in convincing people that something must be done, and outlining what that might be. Industry buyers are not going to lead us since all they care about is next quarter’s results.

2025 was a good year for NLNOG! We hosted three great events, with a large number of attendees at every one of them. It was great to see not just familiar faces, but also a lot of first time visitors.

We hope this will continue in 2026, starting with our New Years Drink on January 30th in De Rechtbank in Utrecht. Details on this event can be found on https://nlnog.net/events.

@hakona @pheras @pluralistic You might be surprised to learn that a lot of thinking has been done already on why this obvious thing hasn't happened. https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/our-self-inflicted-cloud-crisis/
Europe's Self Inflicted Cloud Crisis - Bert Hubert's writings

The short version For decades, governments and organizations could run services based on servers we actually owned. These days, we’ve allowed the IT world to convince us no computing is possible outside of US-style clouds, for which we have no European equivalents. And because of this conviction, we are now moving our most precious data and most critical services to US controlled servers. Yet most of European government software still runs on locally owned systems.
