My grandmother in the early 20th century did in fact, make dog bread. It was made of table scraps, cornmeal, oatmeal, carrots and dishwater (it was before detergents) and baked. This was during the off season after the cattle drive. These working dogs got meat added during the heavy work of the drive to the mountain meadows in spring. My mother claimed it was delicious.
