The Winter Thru-hike Problem - Lemmy.World
> There are relatively few true “winter” thru-hikes. Sure, you can get away with
starting some trails at the end of February or the beginning of March (even if
that’s often a bad idea), but that’s not really what we’re talking about here.
Rather, we’re referring to treks that are doable - and even pleasant - in the
dead of winter, e.g. January. In this post, we’ll review some candidates routes,
and then discuss some special considerations for winter thru-hiking.
Unknown baseweight in an HMG Southwest 5400 vs. ~7 lb baseweight + way too much food in a NashvillePack Cutaway. Both thru-hiking the PCT in 2022, photo at Carson Pass. The HMG’s owner was moving slower than expected and was making plans to complete the trail the next year, the Cutaway’s owner finished the trail in under 100 days.

I love the idea of living close enough to somewhere so amazing that you never get tired of it, and return again and again, honing your knowledge and approach.

Wonderland Trail #35 - Lemmy.World
Happy November everyone! Anyone got any trips lined up? Wish I did! Recently I’ve convinced my SO that UL isn’t crazy and got them to try a 14 oz frameless pack, and we’re awaiting a

Jack’s trip is extraordinary, he did a ton of research, assembled a good kit and
even made some of his own gear before taking a leap of faith traveling across
the Atlantic to hike the stunning Canadian Rockies solo. I was inspired by his
trip, the quality of his videos, and fascinated by his MYOG backpack.
