@raf I also think that while antisemitism is one of the most powerful currents that had the most time to do that insidious work, this is also true in a broader sense (and could be used to illustrate the problem to people who don't get it). American society has been shaped by white supremacy, Israeli society has been shaped by anti-arab ideas (illustrated even in the history of Mizrahi Jews). Going against these currents is an ongoing choice. The default idea space will always go back to them.
@raf there is indeed an audience for antisemitism in all ideological camps, because it's systemic to the societies these people come from. Systemic in the sense that antisemitism has been one of the currents shaping these societies over more than a 1000 years. Antisemitism fits snuggly into the minds of western people of all political camps since it had a space carved out for it over millenia. This is also true with slight variation for other societies too (various Middle Eastern, for example)
@dukepaaron at least according to European Jewish Press the government saw reason and reversed that decision, though I wasn't able to find any other sources confirming it.
Either way, it's infuriating that the security of Jewish communities is up to the arbitrary whims of various politicians
@dukepaaron I'll just say I was angry to the point of my eye twitching when I read the original piece by Ridker. The amount of privilege it takes to write "literature is not public relations and, in any case, cannot be written from a place of fear" is mind boggling. I'm very happy that he doesn't fear for his safety but that's not the case for many Jews, including us powerful Israeli Jews. I'm a-ok with not writing what he considers good literature if it doesn't provide fodder for antisemites
@lilahglitch I'd think that first and foremost they'll be shocked and horrified to find out other Israelis opposed their release. The world is the world, what can we expect from the goyim? But to think their own countrymen and their own government did that... That's far worse.
Then again, I remember one of the released hostages saying that some of them were sure from day dot that they'll be there for years because of Netanyahu. They were, still are, tragically correct

Been numbеr one, but I never had two
And I can't have fun if I can't have you

@serge I mean, if it wasn't a pretext for horrible antisemitic acts, this kind of take would be funny. Yes, ascribe godlike power and control to us, the nation that can't keep a mail system in working order or build a metro for some 60 odd years now 🙄
