I am very happy to report that our recent work on integrating protein structures and population genetics through metagenomics is finally out:

https://science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abq4632

This work was led by Evan Kiefl, a recent graduate of our group, who is not on mastodon. Thanks to his efforts, this study yields new open-source tools, bioinformatics workflows, and insights into evolution and its governing principles.

I need you to know about this project, 'Polar Sounds', the result of a collaboration between @HIFMB_OL, @AWI_Media, and over 100 musicians from around the world.

Just take a moment and listen to some of the most sensitive sounds of our planet: https://citiesandmemory.com/polar-sounds/

Polar Sounds - reimagining the sounds of the Arctic and Antarctic

Polar Sounds is a project to reimagine, remix and recontextualise the sounds of some of the world's remotest regions.

Did you ever get a rejection from a journal with a review that was so detailed and insightful that you were compelled to write back to the editor to ask whether they could forward your appreciation and gratitude to the reviewer?

This happened to me today, and I realized that that is who I want to be when I grow up:

A reviewer that puts your work to sleep when it has to be done, but does it with immense expertise and accuracy, and kills you firmly but not without sympathy.

HIFMB has a quarterly newsletter that captures some of our institute's research as well as more general reflections on science & society. The December issue is out now and can be found 👉
https://241806.seu2.cleverreach.com/m/14082831/

It contains a top story about a national assessment on biodiversity status and trends, news on emerging projects, and an essay on co-design of projects.

If you want to read past issues, you find them here and can also subscribe to receive future newsletters

HIFMB News #4/2022

It is a new start for me on Mastodon. I am looking forward to slowly building my network here, and I hope to contribute to this community by sharing science from my group and others, and my 2 cents on various matters.
