Humans have survived climate change before and can do it again - ABC listen

There’s nothing like history and science to remind us just how precarious our existence on this rotating rock we like to call home, really is.  There were many points in human history where things were touch-and-go for humanity, yet here we are, and this time we’re facing another challenge… this time, of our own creation. Climatologist and author Michael E. Mann's new book Our Fragile Moment: How Lessons from Earth’s Past Can Help Us Survive the Climate Crisis aims to dispel the narrative of despair, by reminding you that humans have survived changes to our climate before and we can do it again.

Five Ways Generation Ships Are Doomed to Fail in Science Fiction

The laws of physics being what they are (and ruling out the Bussard ramjets so popular in late 20th century SF), getting from one solar system to another is likely to consume entire human lifetimes…

As a linguist, I'm really curious to watch how a better understanding of history might change the modern use of the word Luddite. As someone concerned about how tech is being used to concentrate power, I want everyone to learn from this, stat.

The Luddites weren’t backward technophobes. They saw factory owners using tech to degrade their livelihoods and they fought back — first by trying to negotiate, then writing to Parliament, and finally smashing the machines. As workers today organize and strike over bosses using digital tech to upend their industries, there’s a lot we can learn from the Luddites’ story. I was thrilled to dig into it with @[email protected]! https://www.buzzsprout.com/1004689/13638517-the-real-history-of-the-luddites-w-brian-merchant #tech #history #luddite #workers

Reminder to go to your local library and volunteer to speak on their behalf. Let them know that if folks try to come and ban books that you'll speak publicly against them.

We found out folks were going to be commenting at our library calling for banning books.

So.

We all went and spoke out against them.

Only one person got up and called for a ban. She went first. Everyone after her started calling out her behavior and telling the library staff to keep the books.

The first woman and a couple others soon left before the end of comments.

Drive them out. Protect our libraries.

If someone you knew had a partner who was prohibiting them from making their own decisions, threatening them and anyone who helps them for going against their wishes, and physically preventing them from leaving, you would probably be extremely concerned.

This is literally what Republicans are doing to women in red states.

They are codifying abuse.

I'm on the academic job market this fall! 🥳

I recently completed my PhD, and I'm looking for a 3+ year postdoc position. I'm also applying to fellowships to potentially work on my own project ideas. 🔭

Buckle up! It's time for a thread of self-promo 😇

Presidential debate shows how GOP candidates are struggling to address concerns about climate change

The Republican Party's presidential candidates are struggling to address growing concerns about climate change. To many conservatives, climate science is a liberal conspiracy theory. During the GOP presidential debate Wednesday night, candidates were asked to raise their hands if they believe human behavior is causing climate change. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis shut down the question and attacked the “corporate media” before anyone could raise a hand. Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy called climate change “a hoax." Only former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley acknowledged climate change “is real.” Leaders in the GOP’s small but growing movement of environmental activists say their party must do better.
