@IanColdwater The dark-adapted human eye can *almost* detect a single photon. The retina physically responds to one photon, but you need 5-9 within ~100ms to consciously perceive a flash.

So: we are THAT close to directly perceiving a quantum particle, no instrumentation required.

The fact that this is necessary (and it is!) makes me sad.

Just once I want to hear a symphonic performance of the Throne Room / Medal Ceremony piece from Star Wars where someone (probably from the trombone section) stands up and makes the Wookiee noise at the right moment.
