@IanColdwater The dark-adapted human eye can *almost* detect a single photon. The retina physically responds to one photon, but you need 5-9 within ~100ms to consciously perceive a flash.

So: we are THAT close to directly perceiving a quantum particle, no instrumentation required.

The commissioner of the World Knife Throwing League (@WKTLknife) did an AMA on Reddit yesterday. I didn't see it until it was over, so I didn't get a chance to ask what he would do if he showed up to a league event and there were just 10,000 spoons.
