They set about this simple puzzle https://mycrossword.co.uk/quick/133 I set with limited vocabulary and predominantly hiddens, anags, and DD. And no stupid crossword knowledge needed.

Working on #2 currently, which will introduce reversals, homophones, and those all-important containers

Predictably, half the kids at #crossword club were "this is stupid and I hate it" (my school does compulsory club attendance to broaden the kids' horizons after 2 years of lockdown) the other half were "this is cool and I like it".

The best bit is a couple of the "this is cool" crowd were lower-mid set English (inc. one PP) and really surprised themselves by enjoying a word puzzle.

Certainly can’t hurt, and even if the behaviours, feelings and tendencies I have experienced in myself over the last forty-something years aren’t “symptoms” as such, they are still real and unpleasant some of the time so why not try.
