So something to know about me is that I've listened to Heaven or Las Vegas probably four or five hundred times. I was going through stuff recently and set this Cocteau Twins folder open on my desktop for at least a week.

Last night I finally started in on it.

First time listening to everything before Heaven Or Las Vegas all the way through and it's just what I needed. Right at this very moment I might be the one person on this giant rock most excited to listen to Victorialand and Blue Bell Knoll and it's goofy and awesome and my gratitude swells.

Thank you, past me. What a gift. Give yourself gifts.

Over at the hellsite, Angry Staffer has been rightfully gloating.

Here's his latest post:

He's completely unaccountable for an insurrection. You're cheering over a first time offense in NYC that he will serve zero jail time if found guilty."

They divulged they had heard a recording of phone call Trump placed to late House Speaker David Ralston in which the pres asked the fellow Republican to convene a special session of the legislature to overturn Biden’s narrow victory.

Former Sen. David Perdue was asked by the grand jurors about a meeting at Truist Park in December 2020, during which he told Gov. Brian Kemp he wanted the legislature to convene a special session to challenge Biden’s victory

Warren urges Powell to recuse from SVB probe, demands answers of ex-bank CEO

Democratic U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren on Tuesday called on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to recuse himself from an internal review of recent bank failures, saying his actions "directly contributed" to them.

Since the Murdoch family launched Fox "News" several decades ago, Big Journalism has consistently endorsed the fiction that the outlet is journalistic in nature. There was an element of truth to that early on.

But for the past decade and longer, Fox "News" has been a thoroughly dishonest, relentless propagandist. It accumulates power and money by poisoning our public sphere.

Yet the journalism trade persists in calling it a news outlet, compounding the dishonesty.

It's disheartening.

If someone tells me with a straight face their 'job' is influencer I laugh soooo hard at them and walk away.

I don't care what they have to say from their high horse telling me what to do, often they are soo clueless in life it's kinda sad

There’s been a lot of non-trivial breaches over the past week. I mean, breaches that have been disclosed over the past few weeks. The baddies are getting busy while the tech companies are cutting employees. Or so it seems.

A “news” agency pushing the “big lie” knowing that it was false. You got to feel bad for the people who get their information from them. What else are they being lied to about? How many other daily lies are they being innocently fed? It’s a huge betrayal to them & the rest of us.

“Murdoch said Fox News hosts Sean Hannity, Lou Dobbs, Maria Bartiromo and Jeanine Pirro all endorsed the notion that the election was stolen.”

“I would have liked us to be stronger in denouncing it in hindsight,” the News Corp chairman said under oath.

Yeah, this. I've _also_ read the various Confederate states documents of secession.

IT WAS ALL - ALL - ABOUT WHITE SUPREMACY AS MANIFESTED IN SLAVERY, IN THOSE FUCKING WORDS.

Everything else - _everything_ else - is bullshit.

Also, ever done a side-by-side reading of the CSA and USA constitutions? They're almost identical. They added "god," a note about water rights, and everything else is about protecting slavery forever.

It's Black History Month so I'm reading the Declaration of Causes of Seceding States (which, admittedly, is a lot of White history but you see the point). You ever read all 8,000 words of this thing? How long exactly do you think it takes them to get to slavery? A lot of people argue to this day that the Civil War wasn't primarily about slavery. And since this document is pretty long, I bet it takes a while to get to slavery, right? Well anyway, in the first sentence they say "okay, we're going to present the causes of the Civil War!" and then in the second sentence, spoiler alert, it's slavery baby! "The people of Georgia having dissolved their political connection with the Government of the United States of America, present to their confederates and the world the causes which have led to the separation. For the last ten years we have had numerous and serious causes of complaint against our non-slave-holding confederate States with reference to the subject of African slavery." I know that I'm probably preaching to the choir on Mastodon but I bet even most of the choir hasn't tried to read this thing. It's not just kind of about slavery. They don't mention slavery as one thing among many other grievances. It's slavery all the way down. https://web.archive.org/web/19980128034930/http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/reasons.html It's also honestly one of the dumber historical documents I've ever read. Here's Mississippi's declaration which also waits all the way until sentence number two to explicitly state the cause: "In the momentous step which our State has taken of dissolving its connection with the government of which we so long formed a part, it is but just that we should declare the prominent reasons which have induced our course. Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. " I grew up in New York City and I still remember a teacher who tried to argue that the war was about "state's rights." Imagine growing up in a place where the text books and political zeitgeist tries to pass that off as fact. Something to think about for the disinformation researchers out there.
