Sad news: The great anthropologist and friend of the Mursi of Ethiopia David Turton died on 9 December 2023.

For #MosaicMonday this fantastic photo of a mosaic (and a lovely fish 🐟) that was discovered a few months in the submerged ruins of #Roman Baiae.

This is how our garden looked like yesterday morning. Today, everything is gone - actually not everything, only the snow...

Harms is an extremely common name in the region between the river Weser in the South and Holstein in the North.

The name seems to be an abbreviated form of Hermann's (i.e. son of Harm=Hermann), a form typical for Frisian names but could be also Old Saxon.
Amt Siek, Hann(over) is definitely today's Syke near Bremen.
There is another Amt Siek in Holstein where my mother (neé Harms) lives.

Attached: 2 images I'm looking for some #german (#Deutschland, #Deutsch) #genealogy or #history help in deciphering the place of my ancestors' birth. It's recorded in the New York City department of records, but between handwriting fashion of the times and faded pages before they were scanned to microfiche, I can't make out the abbreviations. Further, I'm not sure what was typically recorded. Village? Principality/Electorate/Kingdom? My ancestors were born around 1855 in, I believe, Northern Germany in/near #Bremen. It appears they were both born in the same place. The image is poor but it's the best we have! Maybe it's a #fensterfreitag into the past :) Thanks any @[email protected] or @[email protected] who can help.
