The Pit is gone

It's the May long weekend, and I woke up on this Sunday morning kinda annoyed that a neighbour down the street must have left his campfire smouldering all night, and was he burning garbage? Man it stunk. Nope. No campfire. But definitely smoke. A quick glimpse of my phone and I saw that The Pit was burning down. Dozens of posts on Facebook.

Amazing tea, crocuses, and ick!

I returned home from Singapore with an icky cold! What started with a sore throat spread to face pain (sinuses probably?), sore teeth, crackly ears, chest congestion, sneezing, coughing, just a whole lot of fun! And somehow, Jeff developed the same cold within a couple hours of my arrival? Weird. I missed all the annual fun (stress) of break-up season here in Dawson while I was away.

More from Singapore

For the next two days, we co-worked together in a meeting room at a co-working office across the street from our hotel. Our days were made up with a mix of discussions, presentations, laughs, rants, and just taking advantage of being in the same the room instead of just on our computer screens and video calls. We stayed at the Hotel Waterloo Singapore.

Singapore Slings, the ArtScience Museum, and Korean BBQ

The other night we went to the world-famous Long Bar in the Raffles Hotel, where the Singapore Sling cocktail was invented in 1915. View from outside the door, on the patio, while we waited for a seat: Much to our surprise, the Singapore Sling costs 44 Singapore Dollars (~ $47 Canadian)! I ordered the mocktail version, at just S$16. It was refreshing!

National Museum of Singapore

Despite all advice to the contrary, I decided NOT to stay up until my regular bedtime, to adapt to my new, temporary timezone, and I went to bed at 5pm. It worked out okay! I was up for a bit from 1-2am, but got myself back to sleep and slept through until 6am. YES! After having the breakfast buffet in the hotel this morning with 3 coworkers, I struck off on my own to explore.

I’m in Singapore!

I survived my first 16+ hour flight and now it's 3:40pm and I really want to go to bed. My watch says my body battery is 5% or less. I'm about done! Let's go back to Thursday, when Jeff and I had to take Hank to see our vet after Jeff noticed Hank had a really obscenely puffy eye! When the vet saw him, I think he thought it was just bit by something (dog or bug) but once he lifted the lid, he said the white of his eye was all red and it is infected.

Snotty Nose Rez Kids

For the final show of my winter get-out-there-and-sample-new-things series, my friend Janet and I went to see the Snotty Nose Rez Kids tonight! They are a hip hop duo from British Columbia who have been up here before to play the summer music festival. They won a Juno last year for Rap Album of the Year! But first.... John from Dawson warmed up the sold-out crowd!

Spring Updates

Nothing substantial today, just a bunch of pictures and brief updates! Garage flooded Our garage flooded! The base of the garage doors is flush with the back alley. In the afternoons, the meltwater is flowing pretty decently back there, and without any ditches, it flooded our garage one afternoon last week while we weren't paying attention. It was surprisingly deep! I wish there was a drain, but there is only a drainage pail, so it was quickly full and…

CO2 Levels in the house

Screenshot from the AirThings app last night. For the last few weeks, it has been warm enough to not heat our house much past noon (the sun heats it nicely!) But I've been noticing a trend in our inside air quality that wasn't previously an issue. Our CO2 (carbon dioxide) levels are spiking in the early afternoon, and then go for an even higher spike in the evening.

Life without a fridge

It's just been about a week since I heard a loud air compressor-like noise for a few seconds. But it wasn't until the next day that we noticed water dripping out of the ice dispenser of our fridge. Then it took another couple of hours to discover and piece the evidence together: ice cubes melting in dispenser new ice not being made…
