The graders say it is SPRING!

It's totally not spring, it's cold, and windy, and never ending, but it is sunny and the graders are stripping the snow off the streets! I zipped out for some groceries at lunch yesterday but had to turn around and go a long way because Fifth Avenue was getting its snow stripped up! Not only could I not cross, the drop off was well over a foot.

Sunshine, cold, frozen drain, and pumping iron

While my Dad has already blogged about spring's arrival in Southern Ontario, we are a ways off up here in the Yukon. After starting today at -34C, it peaked at -16 around supper time, but that's the warmest it will be for the next 7 days. However, the sun is magnificent, and the forecast is for sun all week! Last week we had several nights in the minus forties.

Armour courtois – a night of medieval jazz!

Tonight, with my friends Janet, and Alex, I attended Amour Courtois: Medieval Meets Jazz at KIAC (Klondike Institute of Art & Culture). Janet and I purposely didn't look up anything about this concert or the musicians ahead of time. We wanted to be surprised! All we knew was that Janet's favourite genres of music are jazz and medieval, so she was pretty sure she was going to have a good time!

Additional malaria resistance, and I’m going to live FOREVER!

I was thinking about that DNA analysis from the other day when I discovered I was completely resistant to the Plasmodium vivax malaria. I was thinking that I hadn't asked my little AI buddy if anything else was interesting in my DNA test results. And guess what!? I ALSO have resistance to that deadlier form of malaria - Plasmodium falciparum…

Jeff’s got 2 more wheels now!

Jeff has just a couple of goals he wants to accomplish before he feels ready to retire in a couple of years. One of those was to upgrade his truck so he has the proper payload for our Northern Lite truck camper, to get us ready to hit the open road. He thought he had already purchased the right truck, the one he'd drive for decades to come.

How I discovered I’m immune to Malaria!

I like dabbling with my family tree, looking at the names and places, wishing I knew more about the stories of everyone who contributed to who I am. I've had Ancestry.com and MyHeritage subscriptions, and I've purchased DNA kits from both 23andMe and Ancestry.com. 23andMe told me about some of my physical traits and health risks (read that old post here…

Jackery + Igloo Fridge

When I was planning my two-month, cross-Canada road trip in my SUV, I knew I wanted the luxury of having a fridge. Having a cold drink available at all times was a problem I had to solve! I spent a lot of time researching and found the winning combination: Jackery Explorer 1000 Plus Portable Power Station Igloo 32L Electric Compressor Cooler…

What I’m watching – Feb 2026 version

I like to record here what I'm watching, from time to time. It's neat to look back and see how my tastes change. We watch YouTube almost entirely these days, for our evening entertainment. I never thought we'd "cut the cord" for cable, but we did a few years ago and haven't missed TV channels at all. We do pay for YouTube Premium though, so we don't have to watch commercials.

Radon testing, and more!

A week or so ago, I was listening to CBC Radio while I was getting the wood stove going before work, and they were talking about Radon testing in the Yukon. Radon is a radioactive gas that naturally occurs from the breakdown of uranium in the rocks and soil. If it is able to accumulate in your home, it can damage your lungs, and cause lung cancer.

Whitehorse luncheon

Jeff, Hank, and I were in Whitehorse for a couple of nights recently for his employer's long-service award luncheon. He marked 10 years at his job in 2025 so he was honoured alongside other colleagues hitting milestone marks. Since I was invited as his guest, I took two days off work and we made a trip out of it. Of course that meant stacking up appointments and bringing long shopping lists to take advantage of being in the city.
