SEVEN LIVES were what I could save last minute yesterday as they quickly weighed in horses, microchipped and tagged them, and loaded them onto the semi truck. It’s all in the Instagram and Facebook stories. I watched gutted as the Belgian gelding who was loaded first called out to his friend. His friend trying to get to him. I wanted to vomit. I couldn’t even watch. Their eyes literally killed me inside. Then they loaded the horses from heaviest to lightest. Each one I made myself look at. They deserved to be seen and it was the least I could do besides trying to document that they existed. That they were living, breathing, souls. They didn’t choose THIS. SEVEN LIVES. The seven I pulled were who spoke to me for one reason or another. The ex bucking horse mare, she looked so young and let me pet her in the chute when they tagged and chipped her. The 2 year old colt with the bad eye that needs removed. He deserves a life. The two paint mares. The sorrel mare that was used to make babies on a ranch and them thrown away when she couldn’t any longer. The ex ranch mare with the S brand with the shaved mane. The old grey gelding who deserves better for his retirement than THAT. SEVEN. We have raised the funds for 2 of the 7 (THANK YOU!!). A few days ago in the Muddy Creek HMA of Utah— a mare, accompanied by two small foals braved the sun-hardened ground in search of water, and tried to drink from a mire-filled sink on the range. Tragically, the mare broke through the top layer of dried mud and became hopelessly submerged, too weak to free herself. One foal also succumbed to the mud, as mother and baby tried to comfort each other in their final, heartbreaking moments. Local photographer Jennifer Howe alerted the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to the horrific situation. Despite her request for emergency water delivery, the agency refused. “I was witnessing a tragedy unfold right before my eyes and desperately sought help,” said Howe. “When I asked if emergency water could be hauled, the agency official responded with a firm, ‘Absolutely not.’’’ The BLM has previously stated that they will not haul water for wildlife unless preparing for a helicopter roundup, claiming that wildlife must fend for themselves. The mare could not escape. When an anonymous source asked the BLM why ranchers were allowed to haul water to their livestock, but advocates could not haul water to the horses— the BLM replied, “They are wild animals and they need to manage themselves.” Another eye-witness stated advocates witnessed water being siphoned out of ponds in this same area, hauled down the road to fill cattle tanks— leaving wild horses to die of thirst. . . . Today, The Wild Beauty Foundation issued a press release calling upon the BLM and the state of Utah to take action against such unfathomable horrors ever happening again. A few sections below from the op-ed “Government Cruelty Breaks a Mustang’s Spirit” by Ashley Avis. Read the full text I can only imagine the panic that overtook the young wild horse this week in Nevada, as she attempted to outrace the helicopter. For her, this was a nightmare commissioned by the Bureau of Land Management, which intended to destroy her freedom. Having filmed roundups years ago in the state, I knew all too well what was likely to happe. It was beyond disturbing then, but left unchecked by the federal government, the systemic cruelty has become more horrific now. One of the advocates managed to capture the catastrophic policies of the BLM in real time, in a video of this terrified wild mustang evading the helicopter in 90-degree heat and then falling, exhausted, as two wranglers were unleashed. One dismounted and began to kick and strike her. When she didn’t move, they tied a rope around her neck and tail, and forced her to her feet. They then sandwiched her between their horses and proceeded to drag her– before she collapsed again, seemingly lifeless. The BLM’s helicopter operations are not just inhumane; they are a brutal testament to the callousness of the agency’s policies. Wild horses and burros, symbols of the untamed American spirit, are being sacrificed on the altar of private profit, targeted for removal simply because they compete for resources with the commercial livestock industry. Wild horses and burros deserve our grace and protection, not our brutality. At the end of the day, the BLM ironically continues to define roundups as “humane”– but kicking a downed horse is the antithesis of that promise to the American public.".
